Status Post 02: In The Thick of It
Oct 30, 2025

Completed Tasks
Fixing + Identifying Current Bugs
Person(s) Responsible: Danielle + Thomas
Due Date: 2025-10-21
Description/Example(s):
Thomas and Danielle fixed errors and bugs, some self-corrected once dependencies were updated. Bugs included routing errors (pages not found), database entries (posts) not saving to database and showing on prototype.

Task Flows
Person(s) Responsible: Vidhi + Elizabeth
Due Date: 2025-10-17
Description/Example(s):
Mapping task flows for current EpiConnect Compared to EPSY
Through mapping both the flows for EpiConnect and EPSY, our leading competitor, we were able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each UI, where they differ and how we can improve.
EpiConnect Original Flow
Strengths
Emphasis on social features with much of the flow centered around community building.
Comprehensive, all in one solution
Recognizes that epilepsy management has a significant social/emotional component.
Flexible navigation with feature access from multiple entry points.
Weaknesses
confusing information architecture
The flow is sprawling and features are hidden.
UI lacks a primary taskclear primary task
Visual complexity makes updates and bug fixes difficult.
Epsy
Strengths
Clear, linear user joiurney.strengths lie in its linear, clear user journey.
Prioritizes clinical data tracking, directing a main focus for users.
Connects with Apple Health
Dedicated analytics and insights for pattern tracking.
Modular structure
Weaknesses
misses the element of social and peer support epilepsy patients value.
Treats epilepsy as clinical and medical, not emotional.
Lacks warmth and personality

Desirability Study
Person(s) Responsible: Kaylie + Michelle
Due Date: 2025-10-20
Description/Example(s):
Participants tend to use a healthcare app that is simple/intuitive (58%), straightforward and accessible (47%), and clinical/professional (42%)
An interesting quote: "One that ebbs and flows with my current emotional state. When I am recently post-seizure I feel vulnerable and emotional. As time progresses I need more motivation/fun/light-heartedness to stay positive. After a decent amount of time has passed I’d look for something straight forward and informative on medication advancements."
People want to feel secure (68%), calm/relaxed (52%), confident and connected (42%) when using a healthcare app
63% participants prefer dark mode when using digital apps
People tend to think of images of brain, lightning bolts, hospitals, and other negative symbols associated with their epilepsy

Location Permissions and weather API
Person(s) Responsible: Shan
Due Date: 2025-10-23
Description/Example(s):
Will ask the user once in registration to give the app consent for location access. If they say yes, then the weather API will connect. When logging a seizure or trigger, it will automatically output the weather associated with the selected date/time for that log.
Create profile additions: add birthday and add user type
Person(s) Responsible: Danielle
Due Date: 2025-10-27
Description/Example(s):
Users under 13 will not be allowed to register. 13-17 will have different features like community restricted, while 18+ accounts will have less safety-related restrictions. Users who indicate they are supporting an individual with epilepsy will have less / different features in comparison to people living with epilepsy (PLWE)
Other profile questions like epilepsy type, input for gender (drop down instead of type) to be updated in future onboarding / profile creation flow.
Open Tasks
Color Scheme + Mascot
Person(s) Responsible: Michelle
Due Date: 2025-10-31
Description/Example(s):
Looking to lean more towards calmer colors according to the desirability study; we will stick with purple as the primary color (mentioned frequently in the desirability study) but possibly introduce more calm blues for a professional, relaxing look
Exploring different options for a mascot that deters away from a brain due to negative associations with the brain by PLWE. Possible ideas include a dog, octopus, jellyfish, seahorse (national epilepsy awareness day mascot due to its scientific name being hippocampus), or something a little more abstract such as a shape/blob character.

Revisit Typography + Icons
Person(s) Responsible: Michelle
Due Date: 2025-10-31
Description/Example(s):
We’re aiming for fonts with clear accessibility and adding to our rounded icons, including both outline and filled states. Using Atkinson Hyperledgible (designed for users with low vision) and Lexend (designed for users with dyslexia or difficulties with character recognition) to accommodate for PLWE's high co morbidity rate.

Feature Sketches
Person(s) Responsible: Michelle, Vidhi + Elizabeth
Due Date: 2025-10-31
Description/Example(s):
Brainstormed various ways to display medication reminders in notification form and as a “widget” in the dashboard/homescreen for both people living with epilepsy and their support system. Sketched a possible flow for logging seizures, considering what information is important to log and which triggers to list.

Calendar Fix Input
Person(s) Responsible: Shan
Due Date: 2025-10-30
Description/Example(s):
Creating an actual calendar input where the placeholder was for seizure and trigger logging. This will allow for much easier and quicker date inputs for seizures and triggers.
Co-Design Script
Person(s) Responsible: Kaylie + Vidhi
Due Date: 2025-11-03
Description/Example(s):
Co-design script and structure, incorporating feedback from Jessica, Rey and stakeholders. Stakeholder requirement to complete script before posting recruitment form.
Likely pivoting back online since many people with epilepsy cannot drive. Will need some wireframes ready for testing as well. We want to focus on functionality and flow of the app.
Integrate OpenFDA into medication management feature
Person(s) Responsible: Thomas
Due Date: 2025-10-20
Description/Example(s):
Much easier to enter (usually long or complex) generic and brand name medications and select from dropdown list. Also allows for custom names as well.
Awaiting video of it working in prototype
New Tasks
User Personas
Person(s) Responsible: Kaylie + Elizabeth
Due Date: 2025-11-03
Description/Example(s):
Create main 2 user personas: person living with epilepsy, ages 18-25 and the person supporting their loved one with epilepsy, ages 35-55. Can also include clinical, professional provider persona who would contribute information to the expert group on the community forum.
Update to Expo 54
Person(s) Responsible: Shan
Due Date: 2025-11-03
Description/Example(s):
Updating expo (prototyping preview and testing tool) version to most current and compatible with auto-updated phone version.
Create Questions for Stakeholders Weekly
Person(s) Responsible: Kaylie + Vidhi
Due Date: 2025-10-31
Description/Example(s):
Due to restrictions from IRB with creating net new surveys and public-facing data gathering methods, weekly questions for our stakeholders will guide research and design decisions and direction. They provide citations and go more in depth about info during meetings.
Security Recommendations
Person(s) Responsible: Shan
Due Date: 2025-10-31
Description/Example(s):
To come up with security recommendations for storing PHI, and identifying information securely and responsibly. May not be implemented due to scope, but recommended for implementation to the stakeholder.
